Live! Nice story with outdoor drink

A vacant piece of land is turned into a lively place for residents, visitors and entrepreneurs: Slowly but surely a unique place is developing on what was initially desolate. Buurthaven Noord is now a green oasis, filled with neighborhood initiatives. The municipality of Amsterdam has extended the permit for the site until the end of 2021. How did it develop in this way and how can it continue to exist within the planning of the future of the Sixhaven area? Mischa Woutersen of Placemakers, creative agency for city activation, tells more about it.

A stone’s throw from the Buikslotermeer pontoon jetty, a special place has been created against the oppression. The former building site for the North/South line, located next to the Willemsluis in Amsterdam-North, has been transformed into a country estate for neighborhood activities. The eye-catcher is the enormous round construction, the Gallic table. It is a large round wooden table with a wooden base frame. Tree trunks serve as seats. The wood is from fallen trees in Amsterdam supplied by Stadshout. In this place, different people from the neighborhood can have a picnic, have a birthday party or read quietly. The main purpose is to meet here. Next door is the soup vegetable garden, where vegetables and herbs are grown. By growing together, coming up with soup recipes and eating them, social contacts between local residents are stimulated and attention is paid to healthy food. Soup packages are also made from the proceeds from the garden, which are sold on the spot. There is also a dog playground and a carpentry workshop for children. It is also a place for one-off events or just to celebrate a birthday.

The municipality of Amsterdam has extended the permit for the site until the end of 2021. How do you deal with the temporary nature and bring in new initiatives. How do you reach the local residents in such an initiative and encourage them to participate? And how do you guide this project into the planning of the municipality? Sign up and find out!
